Apple Crumble

Apple Crumble

This easy Apple Crumble recipe is a comforting dessert featuring tender, cinnamon-spiced apples topped with a golden, buttery crumble. Perfect for any season, it combines simple pantry staples for a quick and delicious treat that can be enjoyed warm or cold.

Ingredients

Scale

Apple Filling

  • 6 cups tart, firm apples (e.g., Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Crumble Topping

  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour for gluten-free version)
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats (optional, use gluten-free oats if needed)
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed (or coconut oil/vegan margarine for vegan version)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Apples: Peel, core, and slice the apples into even pieces. Toss gently with lemon juice, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and salt to coat evenly. This mixture will soften and release juices during baking, creating a flavorful base.
  2. Make the Crumble Topping: In a separate bowl, combine flour, brown sugar, granulated sugar, oats (if using), and cinnamon. Cut in cold, cubed butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Keep the butter chilled for a tender, flaky texture.
  3. Assemble and Bake: Spread the apple mixture evenly in a greased baking dish. Sprinkle the crumble topping generously over the apples. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 35–40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the filling bubbles.
  4. Cool and Serve: Allow the Apple Crumble to cool slightly (about 10 minutes) so the juices thicken. Serve warm with optional vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, custard, or a hot beverage.

Notes

  • Use a mix of tart and sweet apples to achieve balanced flavor and ideal texture.
  • Keep butter cold when preparing the crumble topping to ensure a flaky texture.
  • Don’t skip the oats for added crunch and heartiness.
  • Watch baking time closely to avoid drying out the crumble; look for golden brown topping and bubbling filling.
  • Let the crumble rest before serving so the filling sets perfectly.
