Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted softened butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup sour cream or Greek yogurt

Instructions

  1. Prepare the dough: In a large mixing bowl, cream the softened butter with brown sugar until light and fluffy. Then, add the egg, vanilla extract, and sour cream, mixing well until smooth and combined.
  2. Combine dry ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and cinnamon. Gradually add this to the wet mixture, stirring until just combined to avoid overmixing and keep the cookies tender.
  3. Shape and add cinnamon swirl: Divide the dough in half. Roll out each half into a rectangle on parchment paper. Sprinkle brown sugar and cinnamon over one rectangle, then carefully fold or roll it to create a swirled effect in the cookies.
  4. Chill the dough: Wrap the dough log and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to firm up, which helps preserve the shape of the cinnamon swirl during baking.
  5. Slice and bake: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Slice the chilled dough into 1/4-inch thick rounds and place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, or until edges are golden brown and centers are set but soft.

Notes

  • Don’t overmix dough: Mix ingredients just until combined to keep cookies tender and soft.
  • Chill before slicing: Refrigerating dough makes it easier to cut clean, defined cookie rounds.
  • Use fresh cinnamon: Fresh ground cinnamon provides a brighter, more vibrant flavor compared to old spice.
  • Watch baking time: Overbaking dries out cookies, so remove them when edges are lightly golden but centers still look soft.
  • Use parchment paper: Prevent sticking and promote even baking by lining trays with parchment.
