Ingredients

Scale

Cake Ingredients

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ¾ cups granulated sugar
  • 2 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk

Decorating Ingredients

  • Food coloring gels (various colors for flowers and leaves)
  • Buttercream frosting (enough for crumb coat and decorations)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Your Cake Batter: Preheat your oven and grease your cake pans. Cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy, then add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract. Alternate adding the dry ingredients (flour and baking powder) with buttermilk, mixing gently until you have a smooth batter.
  2. Bake the Cake Layers: Pour the batter evenly into prepared pans and bake until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, approximately 25-30 minutes depending on your oven. Let the cake layers cool completely on wire racks.
  3. Prepare the Buttercream Frosting: While the cakes cool, beat softened butter until smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar, a splash of milk or cream, and any desired flavor extracts until you achieve a creamy, pipeable consistency. Divide the frosting into portions and tint with gel food coloring for floral decorations.
  4. Assemble and Crumb Coat: Place the first cake layer on a cake board or stand. Spread an even layer of frosting on top, then add the second layer. Apply a thin crumb coat around the entire cake to seal in crumbs, then chill the cake in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes to set the crumb coat.
  5. Create and Pipe the Floral Decorations: Using piping bags fitted with petal and leaf tips, pipe the colored buttercream to form garden-inspired flowers and foliage. Begin with larger petals and build up to smaller, intricate details for a realistic and stunning arrangement.
  6. Final Touches: Inspect the cake for any gaps or spots needing coverage and fill them with small buttercream rosettes or leaves. Optionally, add pearl sprinkles or edible glitter to enhance the elegance of your cake.

Notes

  • Use gel food coloring for vibrant colors without thinning the frosting.
  • Practice piping flowers on parchment paper to build confidence before decorating the cake.
  • Keep frosting chilled while piping to maintain shape and prevent wilting.
  • Apply a crumb coat to avoid crumbs in the final frosting layer.
  • Using a cake turntable will make decorating easier and create a more professional finish.
